Tennessee Football Preview

It’s always sad to see a really smart and really nice guy like Derek Dooley fall flat on his face, but as much as we like Derek Dooley personally, there is no doubt that he deserved to lose his job at Tennessee. Three straight losing seasons at a program with a storied past in the toughest conference in America is almost always grounds to get fired. Plus, the overall talent level here really was pretty good despite all the struggles at Tennessee the past few seasons. So Dooley is out and has been replaced by Butch Jones, most recently the head man at Cincinnati. Coach Jones walks into a pretty good situation as he inherits some decent talent, plus fan expectations are finally starting to lower after more than five years in college football wilderness. What was supposedly a temporary slump has turned into a five-year run where the Vols have posted a combined record of just 28-34 overall. And during that period, the non-league schedule actually got a LOT easier as Tennessee has been a pathetic 1-7 in SEC play in each of the past two seasons!

The Vols are not the worst team in the SEC, but they have definitely been in the discussion the past two years which is absolutely stunning!
